So what’s a Woonerf? It’s a streetscape concept adapted from the Dutch and in the case of this project it will incorporate a mixed-use concept along an old rail line that bisects a new housing development that just broke ground along South 2nd Street in downtown Minneapolis. The Woonerf will give pedestrians and bikers a new route to the riverfront, but cars will be permitted to park there during normal business hours.
The 2-block stretch of West 29th Street just off Lyndale Avenue is likely to become the first of this concept beating out a downtown development’s plan to be the first shared-use street in Minneapolis.
The reconfiguration of the rundown stretch between Lyndale and Bryant Avenues is planned for next summer with completion in November of 2016.
